Nashville, Tn- Tennessean’s that are registered to vote have a huge decision to make in two weeks, as a special referendum to overturn a piece of state legislature that has stood for over 85 years will take place. This decision could set Tennessee apart from every other state as Tennessee would be the first state in the union to change its state bird as it is defined -- a warm-blooded egg-laying vertebrate distinguished by the possession of feathers, wings, and a beak and (typically) by being able to fly.
The decision to make this change comes from a successful campaign on Change.org, where 269,543 people signed a petition in 10 days, to change the state bird of Tennessee from the Northern Mockingbird to a picture of Johnny Cash “flipping the bird”. Currently the Northern Mockingbird is the state bird of 5 states including Tennessee. In 1948 South Carolina made the unprecedented decision to drop the Northern Mockingbird as its state bird in favor of the Carolina Wren, which makes sense.
“Not only would making this change set Tennessee apart from all other states, it would help Tennessee tourism. I mean we could use another 50,000 people visiting downtown Nashville on a Wednesday just to see the Johnny Cash Museum!” says Ralph Spears, the head of Nashville Tourism. Rumor has it that if voters decide in favor of Johnny Cash’s middle finger there could be another vote on the horizon to make Dollywood the state capital.
